Welcome to term 3

Dear Parents,

Welcome to term 3.

This term we are learning about ancient civilisations.

As part of our topic we have an exciting trip planned to Jim
Thompson's house on Monday the 9th of May.

Year 5 will be creating various replica objects from ancient
civilisations throughout the term. Therefor we would like to
invite you to attend a guided tour of their ‘Ancient Artefact
Museum’ on Tuesday the 20th of June at 14:15.

Terracotta, Warrior, China

English
This term Year 5 will read non fiction texts about ancient civilisations. They will analyse information, focusing on text layout and language features.
Students will also explore authors styles of writing by comparing the works of significant children's author Roald Dahl. They will read fiction class text Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and re enact parts of it during literacy lessons.
The class will revisit previous spelling words from throughout the year during spelling tests and will work on spelling punctuation and grammar as well as learning new vocabulary.

Please keep doing spelling homework and remember to try and use new vocabulary words as often as possible.

Maths
This term students will revise what they have learnt so far this year and focus primarily on decoding and solving trickier word problems. Children will also be challenged to write their own word problems.

We will also learn about place value in large numbers and decimals, fractions, decimals, percentages, averages and using the four operations (-+x÷) to solve various problems.
The weekly times tables challenge is ongoing this term and competition is getting fierce. Make sure to keep practicing the times tables regularly, to reach the top of the times table pyramid.
Integrated Studies

Topic: Ancient Civilisations

Students will learn when and where the earliest civilisations appeared (including Ancient Sumer, Indus Valley and Ancient Egypt). They will consider the amazing achievements of each civilisation.
Students will explore when and why writing and number systems started to be used, find out how trade developed, investigate ancient structures such as the Egyptian pyramids and Sumerian ziggurats, as well as explore other inventions from the wheel to the toilet. Students will study the Shang Dynasty of ancient China and investigate this era full of innovation and advances.
They will find out what the Bronze Age was like in China, consulting ancient history books and archaeological finds to compare evidence and draw conclusions about a wide range of features.
Students will learn about the Terracotta Army while investigating and making observations on the world’s largest ancient imperial tomb. Children will build replica artefacts from ancient civilisations and create an ancient artefact museum.

ICT
This term we aim to use different methods of finding information, we will use a variety of software to collect, analyse, evaluate and present data and information.
Year 5 will also use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly and aim to recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour online. They will identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact and aim to be responsible digital citizens.
Homework
Extended writing tasks this term will be set on google classroom every Monday and due on Wednesday.
www.mymaths.co.uk work is set every Wednesday and spelling test and math tests will continue every Friday.
